Although some time has passed, my thoughts of late have turned back to the Lent and Easter seasons of last year when I had the privilege of participating in the 9th International Youth Forum in Rome. Organised by the Pontifical Council for the Laity, the forum was attended by delegates from over 80 countries and its theme was “Witnessing to Christ in the World of Work”.

The National Catholic Youth Ministry Award Scheme – the Delargey Awards - is sponsored by the National Council for Young Catholics (NCYC). NCYC is the New Zealand Catholic Bishops’ Conference Agency for Young Catholics.
The 2008 award winners were Kitty McKinley, Susie Jorgensen and Br John Paul Wilson fms.

WYD Coordinator for Christchurch Diocese, Edmund le Grelle, organised the manufacture of embroidered badges for his diocese, which were sold to pilgrims and supporters prior to WYD. The proceeds from the sale of these badges went to supporting three young pilgrims from Samoa get to Sydney.

Church leaders and mayors have joined politicians in wishing young Kiwi Catholic pilgrims “God Speed” as they prepare to leave the country for World Youth Day in Sydney, forming the largest single group ever to leave New Zealand for a non-sporting event. The messages, which can be viewed on YouTube, included words from The Very Rev Ross Bay, Dean of Holy Trinity Cathedral, Auckland, who said: “From Anglicans around the country, we wish you well on this great pilgrimage … There will be lots of serious things to do; let’s hope you’ll also be building great friendships and having great fun!”
